History
The Origin
Behind every dark cloud, there’s a silver lining, for in March of 1980, God plucked a rose from this earthly garden to be replanted in a richer and more beautiful garden. For some unknown reason, on March 14, 1980, many longtime neighbors, and friends, who had not seen each other for years, gathered to pay their respects to our beloved Rosetta Ellis Glymph. On this very day, a group of four people, Louise (Owens) Bradley, Ladee B. (Johnson) Tave, Charlestta (Thompson) Adams, and Patricia Walker, decided that we needed to bring long-time neighbors and friends “together” for a more joyous occasion, at least once a year. Out of these “minds.” The Peck Park Annual June Picnic originated. Two weeks passed, and others became interested in working with this “committee,” Names, addresses, and telephone numbers were collected, and three months later, our first picnic was held on June 19, 1980. OH! WHAT A GREAT TIME we had, reuniting with neighbors, and friends whom we had not seen since high school; seeing their children, grown up, and their grandchildren; hugging, kissing, and picture taking.
Today’s Mission
SPCN has renewed within the last several years to serve the community in an impactful way for families. We’ve hosted a back-to-school event, resource fairs, Thanksgiving fundraising, the Juneteenth Celebration, and recently the Scholarship Fund. In addition, we are engaged with our community by networking and partnering with others to fill the gaps of those in need. Today we mark our 43rd Annual Picnic at Peck Park in Celebration of Juneteenth and our community outreach. Thank you for joining us today and we look forward to continuing our service for the families in San Pedro and District 15 of Los Angeles.
